Ironically, W.L. Haynes could’ve been speaking for prominent 19th- century British scientist John Tyndall when he wrote that it’s “long overdue for all the king’s scientists and all the king’s men” to produce a laboratory experiment that demonstrates the role carbon dioxide plays in warming the planet (Readers’ Forum, Dec. 11).

Tyndall demonstrated exactly that on June 10, 1859, at the Royal Institution in London — with Prince Albert on hand. Tyndall showed that a gas produced when coal is burned, carbon dioxide, was a formidable barrier to radiant heat
